Chief Treaty Negotiator

Reporting to: Metlakatla Governing Council

We are looking for a candidate to lead pivotal treaty negotiations within the B.C. treaty process, collaborating with negotiators from Canada and British Columbia to secure agreements that enhance and protect the political, social, economic, and territorial rights of the Metlakatla First Nation. Responsibilities:
- In collaboration with the Governing Council, develop and coordinate a comprehensive treaty plan with clear goals, objectives, timelines, and metrics
- Manage the contract process, providing regular status reports on progress, required steps, resources, decision points, gaps, and risks
- Establish conflict resolution protocols and ensure budget compliance, recommending adjustments as needed
- Conduct financial reviews, maintain records, and work with Finance for monthly statements and audits
- Oversee the performance and operations of the Metlakatla Treaty Team, approving purchases according to policy and ensuring proper accounting of funds
- Implement and adjust the Treaty Plan as needed in consultation with the Governing Council
- Represent Metlakatla First Nation in negotiations with the Province and Canada, preparing reports, statistics, and other information for negotiations
- Oversee Treaty education and public consultation, engaging with communities and stakeholders, and working with Governing Council representatives to prepare briefing notes
- Present treaty updates at monthly Governing Council meetings or as requested
What You’ll Bring:
- 5+ years’ experience working in the local Indigenous community related to the Treaty process in BC
- 3+ years’ experience in negotiation strategies and the ability to draft position papers and a negotiation framework
- Bachelor’s degree in political science, First Nations Studies, Aboriginal Law, or a related discipline, or an equivalent combination of education and experience
- In-depth knowledge of the Metlakatla First Nation's history and culture
- Exceptional written and verbal communication skills, with a keen eye for detail
- Ability to thrive both independently and as part of a collaborative team
- Talent for building strong relationships with all stakeholders, particularly members of the Metlakatla community, to foster long-term partnerships
- High level of self-awareness and emotional intelligence, with outstanding interpersonal skills to connect with staff, Council, knowledge keepers, Elders, and community members
- Expertise in Microsoft Office Suite and high computer literacy
- Proven ability to demonstrate tact, respect, and diplomacy in all interactions

- Criminal Record Check with a satisfactory result
- One week per month in subsequent months will require travel to Victoria or Vancouver for negotiation meetings
Submission Deadline:
- Closing date: May 9, 2025
- Salary range: $115,000-$120,000 per year
- Hours of work: 35 hours per week
- Schedule: Monday to Thursday from 8:30 am - 5:00 pm, Friday from 8:30 am - 1:00 pm
